Do you know how to make Titanium Clad Plate?

Feb. 28, 2020

Titanium is widely used as a material for various chemical reaction vessels and heat exchangers due to its excellent corrosion resistance, but it has the disadvantage of high cost. This problem is particularly prominent when used as a structural component, and an effective solution is to use titanium steel composite plates. The composite material of titanium and ordinary steel is called Titanium Clad Plate. It has both the corrosion resistance of titanium and the strength of the ordinary steel plate as a structure. It is important that the cost is also greatly reduced.

Production method

Generally, the manufacturing methods of Stainless Steel Clad Plate include: filled metal steel ingot rolling method, explosive composite method, rolling crimping method, and overlay welding method. Considering the characteristics of titanium, the industry often adopts the explosive compound method or rolling and crimping method, and the actual production methods include ① explosive compound method, rolling and crimping method includes ② thick plate rolling method ③ and continuous hot rolling law. The explosive compound method is usually performed at normal temperature, and the rolling and crimping method is assembling and heating rolling of a plate.

Explosive composite method

The main points of the explosive compound method: First, place a certain interval between the two metal plates to be crimped, and then put an appropriate amount of explosive on it. Detonated from one end of the explosive, the explosion speed is several kilometers per second, with which the titanium plate can collide from the angle of the base steel plate. At this collision point, the base steel plate and titanium plate show fluid behavior due to the very large deformation speed and ultra-high pressure. The oxide film and gas adsorption layer on the two metal surfaces are eliminated as metal jets, and the clean surface is between the surfaces. The joining is completed in an instant and is called cold joining.

The titanium steel composite plate manufactured by this method can continue to be hot-rolled to a thickness of 4mm, so it is also called the explosive composite method.

Heavy plate rolling

In the thick plate rolling method, a titanium plate (composite material) and a steel plate (base material) are first assembled with embedded slabs. At this time, a suitable intermediate insert is placed between the titanium plate and the steel, and then electron beam welding is performed under high vacuum. Finally put it in the heating furnace to heat it, and then press it on the thick plate rolling mill to the required thickness, so that the titanium plate and the steel plate are truly joined. Finally, the periphery was cut and separated into 2 plates.

Continuous hot rolling

The continuous hot rolling method is basically the same as the thick plate rolling method, except that the steel plate is added in the middle of the two plates, and the arc welding is performed in the atmosphere. Finally, the continuous hot rolling mill is continuously rolled to the required thickness, and the coil takes out the form. Finally, the periphery was cut and separated into 2 plates.
